Helderburg Velabon D110 Defender: A Detailed Examination

The Helderburg Velabon D110 Defender is not merely a vehicle; it’s a statement of refined taste, meticulous craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for the finer things in life. Imagine walking into a high-end restaurant and skipping straight to the dessert menu – that’s the experience of encountering Velabon. We will delve into the exquisite details of this custom-built Defender, covering its exterior, interior, and drivetrain.

Exterior

A Custom Color Masterpiece

The exterior of Velabon is swathed in a custom-mixed green metallic color that defies simple description. It’s a shade unlike any other, not found on any standard Land Rover palette. In direct sunlight, the green metallic flakes shimmer, creating an illusion of depth and richness, as if the color were suspended beneath a sheet of glass. In shaded areas, the color deepens into a dark, almost military-esque green, exuding an aura of timeless elegance.

Unparalleled Build Quality

The build quality of the Helderburg is immediately apparent. Unlike many restored Defenders where paint accumulates in the seams and lines are misaligned, Velabon showcases a dedication to perfection. Each body panel, including the complex wing assembly, is disassembled and painted individually. This meticulous process ensures that the metallic flakes lay uniformly, avoiding any mismatched lines or inconsistencies.

Drivetrain and Performance

At the heart of Velabon lies a performance-tuned 2.5 turbo diesel engine. This powerplant delivers a smooth and enjoyable driving experience, suitable for both highway cruising and off-road adventures. Fuel efficiency is also a highlight, with an estimated 28 to 32 miles per gallon.

Front-End Aesthetics

The front of Velabon features a unique bumper design, complemented by aluminum headlight surrounds. Instead of the traditional “Defender” script, the grille proudly displays “Land Rover,” adding a touch of distinction. A metal grill, sourced from Germany, and a subtly bumped-out design add dimension. Red tow hooks provide a pop of color.

Nostalgic Touches

Adding to Velabon’s charm are the pop-up vents beneath the windscreen. These levers open to provide a direct blast of fresh air, evoking a sense of nostalgia. The windscreen is heated, making Velabon an ideal vehicle for winter conditions, capable of melting ice and snow with ease.

Stance and Suspension

Velabon’s stance is both aggressive and refined. A properly executed 3-inch Old Man Emu suspension lift enhances its off-road capabilities without compromising ride quality. Unlike poorly executed lifts, the Helderburg’s suspension is engineered with heavy-duty components, including transmission, transfer case, and differentials. Proper radius arms correct axle angles, ensuring that drive shafts and brake lines are not stretched or strained. Anti-roll bars maintain stability during on-road driving, providing a sports car-like feel. Wider arches and custom wheels further enhance Velabon’s stance.

Additional Exterior Details

Velabon is equipped with practical step-up bars for easy entry and exit. A Puma bonnet, sans the traditional louvers, contributes to the vehicle’s clean and sophisticated aesthetic. The black roof provides a striking contrast to the green metallic paint.

Interior

Luxurious and Durable Leather

Stepping inside Velabon is akin to entering a sanctuary of luxury and comfort. The interior is swathed in high-grade Scottish leather, chosen for its exceptional durability and exquisite feel. The leather is thick enough to withstand the wear and tear of daily use, even from canine companions. The rich aroma of the leather permeates the cabin, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Perforated Detailing

The seats, door cards, and center console feature perforated leather, adding visual texture and appeal. Piping along the sides of the seats creates a subtle contrast, while consistent stitching maintains a cohesive aesthetic.

Color Palette

The interior color palette is a harmonious blend of dark saddle brown and light chocolate tones. The stitching on the diamond-patterned accents is slightly lighter, creating a caramel-like effect. The headliner is finished in Italian Alcantara suede, complementing the overall color scheme.

Panoramic Glass Roof

A single panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light, creating an airy and open feel. The tinted glass provides ample light without excessive heat.

Leather-Wrapped Accents

Every surface, from the A-pillars to the window surrounds, is covered in leather. This attention to detail elevates Velabon’s interior to a level of sophistication rarely seen in other Defenders.

Handmade Steering Wheel

The wood steering wheel, crafted by Italian artisans, is a testament to the dedication to handmade quality. Each steering wheel is painstakingly carved and finished by hand, resulting in a smooth and flawless surface.

Additional Interior Features

The upper and lower dash, air conditioning unit, steering column, fuse box, and center brake are all wrapped in leather. Heated seats provide comfort in colder climates. German square-weave carpet, bound in matching leather, completes the luxurious interior. Even the sun visors are finished in chocolate leather.

Second Row and Puppy Package

Velabon is designed with dog lovers in mind. The second row features a bench seat, providing a comfortable platform for canine companions to relax and sleep. Saddlebags on the backs of the front seats and the rear door offer ample storage.

Rear Cargo Area

The rear cargo area is equipped with a “puppy package,” featuring additional heat transfer resistance and padding. This ensures that canine passengers remain comfortable and safe. The back door is insulated and padded for added comfort.

Conclusion

The Helderburg Velabon D110 Defender is a masterpiece of automotive craftsmanship. From its custom-mixed green metallic paint to its luxurious leather-clad interior, every detail is meticulously executed. The performance-tuned turbo diesel engine delivers a smooth and efficient driving experience, while the upgraded suspension ensures both on-road comfort and off-road capability. Velabon is more than just a vehicle; it’s an expression of individuality and a celebration of the finer things in life.

Four Styles, One Custom Process

A Helderburg is not one look. It is your own.

Velabon is one direction. Every Helderburg is custom, designed around the owner rather than chosen from a catalogue, and most commissions draw from one or two of these four. The expedition build is the one most people picture first. It is only the beginning of what a custom Defender by Helderburg can be.

Why a Helderburg Drives Differently

The difference is not cosmetic alone.

The architecture itself has been re-engineered. If you want the full picture of what is under a Helderburg before you speak to Paul, two doorways.

The Twelve Systems

Velabon carries twelve proprietary Helderburg systems, found in no other restored, custom or restomod Defender. The drivetrain on the original block. A suspension with the body roll engineered out, widened at the chassis, not with spacers. A cabin built for the eighth hour, not the first.

Three Approaches. Only one is a Helderburg.

A classic Defender can be restored, restomodded, or re-engineered. A restomod replaces the body and drops in a GM V8 crate motor, no longer numbers matching. Respectfully, a kit car. A Helderburg keeps the original chassis and block, and re-engineers everything else.
