The Toru Story

Toru, Land Rover Defender 110 Double Cab, and they rarely come up.

Toru is built in the Spectre style, inspired by the Land Rover Defender made famous by the James Bond film. What sets it apart is what sits underneath: a real, original, numbers-matching Land Rover Defender 110 with a genuine Double Cab truck body, given a full ground-up restoration and re-engineered by Helderburg. Many Spectre-style trucks are built on replica bodies from Spain and Turkey. This is the real thing, and the Double Cab is the rarest body we build.

Toru was commissioned by author Robert Kiyosaki and completed in 2023. He first fell for a Spectre-style build I had done in Bahama Gold, and told me that once he had a Helderburg he would sell his Ferrari 488, because he would simply never drive it again. That Bahama Gold truck was already spoken for, so I built this one for him.

He kept Toru at his home in Scottsdale. A busy travel schedule kept him from driving it every day, but he loved taking it to local appointments and his favorite coffee shop, and to the occasional special event, where he would text me afterward about the reaction it drew from everyone who saw it in person.

He is now trading Toru in for a different Helderburg, built without the lift, which is how these tend to be lived with: built, driven, enjoyed, then succeeded by the next commission. That is why Toru is available now.

Under it sits the 300 TDi, modified to our SV specification, so it drives on the highway like a modern SUV. The tires are beastly and not DOT-approved, but they make the look. In Golden Metallic Pearl, it is noticed without asking to be.

This is not simply a restored Defender. It is a Helderburg. An authentic, numbers-matching, British-built One-Ten Double Cab in this condition rarely comes up, and this is one to invest in.

Quick Answers

Is Toru the actual Defender from the James Bond film?

No. Toru is built in the Spectre style, inspired by that Defender. What matters is what it is: a real, original, numbers-matching, British-built Land Rover Defender 110 with a genuine Double Cab body, re-engineered by Helderburg. It is the genuine article, not a replica.

How is this different from the Spectre-style replicas from Spain and Turkey?

Many Spectre-style builds use replica or non-original bodies. Toru is a genuine, numbers-matching, originally British-built Defender Double Cab, British Motor Industry Heritage Trust registered. The style is a Defender 110 Double Cab; the truck is the real thing.

What is a Double Cab Pick Up and why is it rare?

The bed is 44 inches deep and easily carries ten 50-pound bags of dog food, so it is as practical as it is rare.

Can I drive Toru every day and on the highway?

Yes. The 300 TDi in Helderburg SV specification drives on the highway like a modern SUV. Note that the tires are aggressive and not DOT-approved, so for regular road use you may wish to fit DOT-approved tires.

What about the tires?

The tires are beastly off-road tires chosen for presence, and they are a large part of the look. They are not DOT-approved, so depending on your state and how you plan to use Toru you may want a set of DOT tires for the road.

What if I have an accident? Who can repair it?

If anything happens, Helderburg works with a local repair shop, or picks the vehicle up and brings it to one of our own paint shops.

Who will maintain it?

Routine work can be done by any local shop that services European or diesel vehicles. It is also covered under the Helderburg Concierge Program for three years, extendable for two more, so a Helderburg mechanic comes to you or we collect the vehicle.

Is Toru a good investment?

Authentic, numbers-matching, British-built Double Cabs are genuinely rare and increasingly collectible, and rarity tends to support value over time. Helderburg prefers to show the truck and its provenance and let the buyer judge.

What engine does Toru have?

The original 300 TDi, modified to Helderburg SV specification and re-engineered from the chassis up, with the torque and composure of a modern SUV.

Is it legal to register and drive in my state?

Yes. Toru is well over 25 years old and legal to import, register, and drive in all 50 states. Registration details vary by state, and the tires are not DOT-approved.

What does Toru cost, and are there hidden costs?

Toru is 348,539 US dollars, firm. Full payment by wire completes the purchase. Trade-ins are welcome, transport is separate as enclosed white-glove delivery, and financing is not offered. Three years of the Concierge Program, unlimited miles, remain.

Is Toru available now?

Yes. Its owner is trading it in for a different Helderburg without the lift, so Toru is available now at 1,170 miles.

How do I pay, and is it safe to send a wire this large?

Full payment by wire completes your purchase of Toru. Before any funds move you receive a written agreement and confirm the details directly with Paul, so you always know exactly who you are paying and why. Helderburg does not offer financing, and trade-ins are welcome. As with any large transfer, confirm the account details with Paul by phone before you send.

The Three Approaches

A classic Defender can be approached three ways. Only one is a Helderburg.

The right vehicle is not just a matter of finish or feature. It is a matter of what was kept, what was replaced, and whether the result is still authentic. Once the distinction is clear, the choice tends to make itself.

i.

Restoration

Drives like an old Defender.

A faithful return to original specification. Original parts, original behavior, original limitations. It steers like an old Defender, brakes like an old Defender, rides like an old Defender. The Sunday vehicle, in the literal sense.

  • Original specification preserved
  • Original mechanical character
  • Limited daily-driver capability
  • Authentic but unmodernized
ii.

Restomod

Looks like a Defender. Isn't one.

A new body sourced overseas, fitted to a galvanized chassis of unknown origin, powered by a crate motor. The vehicle is no longer numbers-matching, no longer authentic, no longer a single engineered piece. A kit car assembled from parts that were never designed to work together.

  • Replacement body, not original
  • Crate motor swap, no longer numbers-matching
  • Mixed-origin assembly
  • Long-term value uncertain

Watch, the truth about V8 swaps →

iii.

Helderburg

A re-engineering.

The original chassis. The original engine block. Numbers match. Everything else, every system the vehicle relies on, has been redesigned in-house and built only for Helderburg. What the original Land Rover engineers would have built if they had today's tools and time.

  • Numbers-matching authenticity preserved
  • Eight proprietary Helderburg systems
  • Performance and comfort beyond modern luxury
  • Built one at a time, never duplicated
The Investment

A Helderburg, by the figures.

Each Helderburg meets the same standard. What varies is how a buyer enters the build. Some commissions are available now, some are approaching completion with personalization still open, and some begin from a private conversation.

Commission Range

$274K to $480K+

Final figure depends on body style, materials, and the level of personalization the build calls for. Available commissions are priced individually.
Time to Drive

2 Weeks to 16 months

Helderburgs ready for delivery require two to three weeks for transport coordination and white-glove handover. Builds approaching completion are weeks or months from delivery. Full bespoke commissions are 12 to 16 months from concept to delivery.
Long-Term

Numbers match

Numbers-matching classic Defenders are no longer manufactured. Original left-hand drive sources are diminishing each year. Each Helderburg is built on a vehicle that cannot be replaced.
