A son’s Defender, and the second build it started.
Theo began as the second half of a conversation. Kyle’s father, Steve, wanted a Helderburg. Kyle, in Franklin, decided he wanted one too, and the two builds went onto the floor of the English workshop together, a few feet apart.
What neither of them admitted at first was the competition. Twelve months, an ocean away, two Defenders taking shape at the same bench, and a quiet argument over whose color would catch the light and whose would come off the trailer first. The strange part came at the end. Father and son had specified their interiors separately and arrived at almost the same cabin, the same leather, the same configuration, the same instruments. A year spent arguing about the outside, and they had agreed on the inside without a word.
Where they part is the paint. Steve took a deep, saturated red. Kyle took Dynamic Blu Metallic, mixed by eye and now retired, its formula resting in our archive beside Rocco‘s. Neither will be mixed again. More than three thousand hours of hand work went into Theo, hand-formed aluminum, hand-cut louvers, hand-soldered wiring, no robots near it. And it did the rarest thing a finished commission can do. Before the year was out, Kyle ordered a second Helderburg, an orange Defender 90 soft top. The best review a build can earn is the next one.
