Commission Range
Final figure depends on body style, materials, and the level of personalization the build calls for. Available commissions are priced individually.
Osprey is a one-of-one Helderburg D90 commission, engineered as a unified long-range platform for remote travel, winter conditions, and sustained highway driving. Recently profiled by Motorious for its extreme range and precision, it represents a singular, fully integrated approach to the Defender platform.
Developed over thousands of hours as a complete engineering program, Osprey integrates powertrain, chassis, and structural systems to work together under real-world load rather than as a collection of aftermarket parts. At its core is the Helderburg Turbo Diesel SV Edition, an in-house engine program calibrated to deliver approximately 520 lb-ft of torque in the 1,800 rpm range—providing up to 100+ lb-ft more torque than many GM V8 conversions while producing that force at far lower engine speeds. This low-rpm torque delivery translates into immediate thrust without drama, reduced mechanical stress when towing or climbing, and greater control in technical terrain and snow.
Osprey was designed around three primary use cases: mountain access, winter security, and long-distance efficiency. The SV Edition’s torque curve allows steady, precise power application on snow-covered roads and steep grades, minimizing wheelspin on the way to remote ski lodges or mountain properties. At the same time, the powertrain is tuned for approximately 28 miles per gallon, dramatically extending usable range compared to typical gasoline V8–converted Defenders, which often average in the 8–12 mpg window. Despite its emphasis on low-end capability, Osprey will comfortably cruise at approximately 85 mph, maintaining stability and composure suitable for multi-state highway travel.
Underneath, Osprey features Helderburg Exclusive Suspension and the Helderburg Aegis Braking System, both developed specifically for this platform. The wider stance and bespoke suspension geometry provide stability on winding mountain roads and uneven surfaces, while the braking system is engineered for repeatable, fade-resistant performance on extended descents and under heavy load. The entire vehicle was validated in a dedicated 30-day program in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, including steep rock climbs, loose surfaces, winter-like conditions, and sustained highway use—confirming that the engineering lives up to its intent in real environments, not only on paper.
Visually, Osprey remains quietly unmistakable. The hand-formed aluminum body is finished in a custom Helderburg exterior color created exclusively for this commission and permanently retired once completed; no future Helderburg will be built in this exact finish. Signature Helderburg design cues—the bump-out, louvers, billet details, and purposeful stance—are present, but there is no visual clutter, no adventure rack, and no unnecessary ornamentation. This is a study in restraint: a flowing, timeless silhouette that looks as appropriate at a ski lodge or mountain airstrip as it does arriving in the city.
Inside, Osprey becomes deeply personal. Dark brown and saddle leather, tanned to order rather than pulled from a shelf, wrap an interior whose architecture is built around the owner’s height, driving posture, and daily rituals. Perforated seat inserts, contrast piping, and custom-built frames support long-distance comfort, while leather-wrapped window surrounds and cargo trims are specified with dogs and real luggage in mind, balancing durability with warmth. A Focal audio system, analog-feeling controls, and the tactile click of the turn signal reinforce the romance of time in an era of touchscreens, and a tinted panoramic glass roof brings light into the cabin without sacrificing comfort.
Osprey is not a template, a package, or a configuration; it is a completed chapter—an heirloom-grade Defender authored for one life, proven in mountain terrain, and now recognized by Motorious as a singular example of diesel-led endurance engineering.

Ask Paul
The right vehicle is not just a matter of finish or feature. It is a matter of what was kept, what was replaced, and whether the result is still authentic. Once the distinction is clear, the choice tends to make itself.
A faithful return to original specification. Original parts, original behavior, original limitations. It steers like an old Defender, brakes like an old Defender, rides like an old Defender. The Sunday vehicle, in the literal sense.
A new body sourced overseas, fitted to a galvanized chassis of unknown origin, powered by a crate motor. The vehicle is no longer numbers-matching, no longer authentic, no longer a single engineered piece. A kit car assembled from parts that were never designed to work together.
The original chassis. The original engine block. Numbers match. Everything else, every system the vehicle relies on, has been redesigned in-house and built only for Helderburg. What the original Land Rover engineers would have built if they had today's tools and time.
Each Helderburg meets the same standard. What varies is how a buyer enters the build. Some commissions are available now, some are approaching completion with personalization still open, and some begin from a private conversation.
