The Commission

A 1997 Defender, re-engineered.

Lange began as a 1997 Land Rover Defender 110, kept numbers-matching and re-engineered by Helderburg from the chassis up. It was built for John, a rancher in Texas.

Deep Forest Metallic Green does most of its work outdoors. Near-black under a garage light, it turns clearly green the moment it reaches open sky. Beneath it sits the full Helderburg re-engineering: a performance-tuned turbo diesel paired with a short-shift five-speed manual, and VectorLine road suspension tuned for daily driving.

If Lange speaks to you, I would be glad to build yours.

Every line above is the result of upgrades engineered in-house, found in no other custom or restomod Defender in the world.

Four Styles, One Custom Process

A Helderburg is not one look. It is your own.

Lange is one direction. Every Helderburg is custom, designed around the owner rather than chosen from a catalogue, and most commissions draw from one or two of these four. The expedition build is the one most people picture first. It is only the beginning of what a custom Defender by Helderburg can be.

Why a Helderburg Drives Differently

The difference is not cosmetic alone.

The architecture itself has been re-engineered. If you want the full picture of what is under a Helderburg before you speak to Paul, two doorways.

The Twelve Systems

Lange carries twelve proprietary Helderburg systems, found in no other restored, custom or restomod Defender. The drivetrain on the original block. A suspension with the body roll engineered out, widened at the chassis, not with spacers. A cabin built for the eighth hour, not the first.

Three Approaches. Only one is a Helderburg.

A classic Defender can be restored, restomodded, or re-engineered. A restomod replaces the body and drops in a GM V8 crate motor, no longer numbers matching. Respectfully, a kit car. A Helderburg keeps the original chassis and block, and re-engineers everything else.

Worth Knowing

Questions people ask before commissioning a custom Defender.

  • Yes. A Helderburg is not a fragile restoration. Like Lange, every build is re-engineered from the chassis up around a Helderburg Performance-Built 300 TDi, a purely mechanical engine with no computer, built to run past 500,000 miles on nothing more than oil changes every 5,000 miles. Parts are plentiful, and if it ever needs us, a Helderburg mechanic comes to the vehicle.
  • Yes. Every Helderburg begins as a Defender over 25 years old, like Lange's 1997 donor, so it is exempt from the federal import rule and legal to import, register, and drive in all 50 states. Registration details vary by state.
  • Lange runs a performance-tuned turbo diesel: 28 to 32 mpg, exceeds highway speeds with ease, and drives like a modern SUV. The same drivetrain is available on your commission.
  • Not at all. Lange's five-speed uses a stop-and-go clutch that makes busy city traffic effortless, with no clutch use required at a stop. It is approachable for first-timers, the configuration clients find most fun to drive, and it holds the highest resale value. If you prefer, you can specify an automatic for your build.
  • Yes. VectorLine suspension is smooth and stable on-road and off, rides plusher and stays more planted than a Jeep or G-Wagen, and you can drive it all day on mixed terrain without feeling beat up.
  • Every Helderburg commission includes the Concierge Program, with seven years and unlimited miles of coverage. A Helderburg mechanic comes to the vehicle, you never take it to a dealership, and original parts remain available for life.
  • Lange is numbers-matching, British Motor Industry Heritage Trust registered, and a one-of-one specification with the sought-after manual. Every Helderburg is built the same way, and vehicles built this way hold value far better than V8-swapped restomods, which the secondary market discounts once the novelty passes.
  • A restoration returns a Defender to factory condition. A typical V8 restomod is loud and fast but causes problems over time and is discounted at resale. A Helderburg keeps the numbers-matching chassis and engine block and re-engineers every system around them. The full breakdown is in the Classic Defender Buyer's Guide.
  • Yes. Every Helderburg is built one at a time to its owner's specification. You choose the body, drivetrain, color, and every detail, and we build it from the chassis up. Start a commission.
