Rocco: Tailored Luxury Without Erasing the Defender’s Soul

Some restomod projects chase extreme power through engine swaps. Rocco, commissioned by a Nashville father and son, preserves the Defender’s original soul while improving every detail. This $400,000 commission retains its five-cylinder turbodiesel, updated and recalibrated for reliability and modern response without distorting authentic character.

Design as Architecture

Rocco’s bodywork receives lighter aluminum panels, flared fenders, and a more aggressive aesthetic while maintaining iconic Defender proportions. Spectacular gloss red paint emphasizes the platform’s square surfaces. The front introduces a black grille, LED headlights, and robust steel bumper, while raised ride height and mud-terrain tires reinforce off-road capability.

Chassis and suspension systems underwent profound revision using components designed in-house. Over 3,000 hours of work transformed Rocco through complete re-engineering rather than simple restoration. This is design work, not assembly.

“Each Helderburg is developed as a unique project and built starting from a complete re-engineering of the original vehicle.”

Scottish Leather, Mechanical Soul

The cabin abandons the Defender’s spartan origins for premium materials and meticulous finishes. Seats combine brown and black handcrafted Scottish leather with precise stitching worthy of a grand tourer. The dashboard integrates a modern infotainment system alongside a new steering wheel and bespoke details.

Despite luxury appointments, Rocco retains the authentic, mechanical feel that made the Defender an off-road icon. This defines Helderburg’s approach: vehicles that excite through personality, craftsmanship, and presence rather than performance figures alone.

In a market where luxury SUVs increasingly resemble one another, Rocco proves space remains for radically different commissions built for those seeking something irreplaceable. Read the full feature on Automoto.it for additional insights into the build’s design evolution.
