Raleigh is this year’s build. It celebrates my father’s birthday and carries the name of his English Raleigh 3‑speed bicycle. I remember riding through Chicago on that bike, crossing cobblestone streets with him at the handlebars. Those early rides, and his love of all things English, shaped this one‑of‑one Defender.
At first glance, Raleigh looks black. However, it is not. The body is a custom metallic green with a bronze undertone. We mixed it by eye to echo his bicycle’s dark metallic brown, creamy white, and green. In the sun, the color opens up and shows its depth. It feels calm, intentional, and built to last.
Underneath the paint is our Mark 3.5 turbo diesel. It keeps the original block and chassis, yet almost everything else is our own engineering. Drive it gently and it feels quiet and refined. But open the exhaust valves and it changes. The turbo whistles. The engine crackles. It pulls hard enough to raise the hair on the back of your neck. Thanks to the widened stance and revised suspension, it stays flat and composed where an old Defender would lean.
Raleigh is not a simple restoration, and it is not a kit‑car restomod. Instead, it is a numbers‑matching, authentically British Defender, built in England by craftsmen who grew up with these vehicles, then elevated into an heirloom.
Inside, it feels like an English library. There is deep brown and black leather, butterscotch stitching, Italian Alcantara overhead, and a panoramic glass roof. The high‑fidelity audio system uses Italian amplifiers and French speakers, some made only for Helderburg, and every wire is soldered for the long term.
Finally, Helderburg custom engraving makes Raleigh truly unique. Master engraver Edward Ashcombe spent about 300 hours hand‑engraving latches, vents, door handles, window cranks, and more. The scenes of hunts, dogs, and time outdoors with my father turn this commission into a moving piece of memory in metal.
