What a week in the Ozarks looks like, at least in my world, starts with a simple line: “OK, let’s go.”
Oliver flew in from England, Mike came down from New York, and we spent the week in Northwest Arkansas scouting a portion of the route for the upcoming Helderburg Expedition. We pulled the tops off a D90 and a D110, loaded radios, bear spray, tire gear, and snacks, and ignored the rain in the forecast. Once you get into some parts of the Ozarks, fuel, food, and cell service are not guaranteed—so you prepare, then you go.
Over two days we covered more than 400 miles of crooked, steep roads, rock ledges, water crossings, and sandy climbs. The kind of roads that come with signs simply stating, “Roads Are Crooked and Steep,” and absolutely mean it. At one point Oliver said it was the most fun he’d had driving in a very long time. Mike couldn’t stop smiling.
But the real charge wasn’t just from the terrain. Nobody was rushing anywhere. There were no meetings, no deadlines, no urgency beyond choosing the next line up a hill. Just three people, two open-top Defenders, and enough time to let the day unfold.
This short film captures a few moments from that scouting trip. The vehicles are the excuse, but the point is the feeling: stepping away from the routine, exploring places you’d never normally see, and sharing the road with people who view the world a little differently. Watch the full length film.
