Owners’ Stories
The people who chose a Helderburg.
A Helderburg is what you choose when you could drive anything else. These are the owners, where they are, and the vehicles built for them. One at a time, never the same twice.

Owners across AmericaEach commission one of oneHand built in England
Most owners say the same thing. They shopped the others first. Then they drove a Helderburg, and the decision made itself.
What follows is not a gallery of vehicles. It is a record of people, where they live and what they do, and the Defender that was built around their life rather than someone else’s idea of one. We name the build, the configuration, and the place. We do not name what is private.
“
We shopped other builders and they do a nice job, but they did not compare to Helderburg. The fit, finish, paint colors, and how the Helderburgs we test drove were noticeably better in our opinion. Our Helderburg is a dream come true.

In Their Own Words
Owners, on camera.
Filmed with owners and their Helderburgs in Franklin, Tennessee.
Some owners love their Helderburg so much that it lives on Instagram. A few have given the vehicle a channel of its own, devoted entirely to a single Defender. Others simply share their Helderburg as they live with it, again and again. Either way, there may be no clearer measure of how one of these is owned.
Each vehicle was commissioned to one person and built for the way they drive. Select a build to read its full story.

Hermes turns heads everywhere in Memphis, but what I did not expect was how easy it is to actually drive and park. It is my daily driver, just turned 13,000 miles, and it is only improving.
I wanted a classic Defender 110 I could actually use in Utah, not baby in a garage. Sarge handles the canyons and the snow without drama and still feels special every time I get in. Helderburg got it right.
Dieter has become part of the family. Beach days, dinners, the school run, it does all of it and still feels like a treat. We could not be happier with how it turned out.
I was nervous a classic Defender would be a handful, so I chose the automatic. Acrux is genuinely easy to drive every day, and the cabin is so comfortable. It is exactly what I hoped for.
Arlo in Noir Lacquer is stunning in person. It works just as well in the Hamptons as it does in Los Angeles, and the finish is flawless. I get stopped constantly.
From the first conversation to delivery, the whole process felt personal. Alvin is beautifully built and a joy on the Lowcountry roads. The fit and finish is everything they promised.
ModelCustom Defender 110, Spectre Double Cab, soft top
The Spectre Double Cab with the soft top is the perfect Nashville vehicle. Top down on a spring evening, room for everyone, and it drives beautifully. Antoni gets used constantly.
You do not see many of these in Arkansas. Orpheus is a head turner, but more than that it is a pleasure to live with. The team could not have been better to work with.
Montana is hard on vehicles and Beau has taken everything I have thrown at it. The double cab is endlessly useful and the build quality is outstanding. Highly recommend.
Paul made the perfect Defender for me, and my kids love it. I drive it every day, and it is everything I hoped for and more.

I loved Sophia so much I started an Instagram just for her. The craftsmanship is remarkable, and people ask about it everywhere I go in Dallas. One of the best decisions I have made.
Vermeer in Pearl White is a work of art. The paint and the interior are flawless, and it drives far better than my other custom Defender that I had built. I could not be prouder of it.
ADA in Leaf Green is the most beautiful thing in my driveway. The 90 is the perfect size for Miami, and the quality is incredible. I am in love with it.
Centurion has its own following now, and for good reason. The attention to detail on this 90 is unreal. Helderburg delivered exactly what they said they would.
Leo is perfect for the Pacific Northwest. Soft top in the summer, comfortable in the rain, and beautifully built. I document the whole thing online because I enjoy it that much.
Winston is the best thing I have parked in Brooklyn. The 90 is ideal for the city, and the build quality stops people on the sidewalk. Could not be happier.
Ragnar is the one I will keep forever. The color, the finish, the way it drives, all of it is exactly right. Happy to talk to anyone who is considering one.
Teewinot was built for the mountains and it shows. The Adventure spec is perfect for Jackson Hole, and the Bronze Green looks incredible against the snow. A genuine joy to own.
Magnus is a 130, so there is room for the whole family and the gear, and the Bahama Gold is unlike anything else on the road. Beautifully built and a blast to drive.
Odin in Sea Foam Metallic with the soft top is a showstopper in Buckhead. The 90 is so much fun, and the finish is immaculate. Thrilled with the whole experience.
There is a Helderburg in nearly every state across the USA, and in seven different countries.
A Helderburg is a rare thing to see in person. Owners keep them, and that scarcity is part of why they hold their place. A selection of where they are today.

The practical questions, answered plainly. Owning, driving, insuring, registering, and living with a custom classic Defender.
Yes. A Helderburg is re-engineered so it can be driven every day. The suspension is built to remove the body roll a classic Defender is known for, the brakes are sized to modern roads, and the cabin is insulated for heat, cold, and noise. Owners drive them on the school run, on the highway, and across the country. An original, unrestored Defender is a different experience, but a properly re-engineered one is meant to be lived with.
Yes. The proprietary suspension keeps the vehicle composed at highway speed, the seats and cabin are built around the owner, and the turbo diesel cruises comfortably for hours. Power is not the point, composure is. The vehicle is engineered to make a long drive a place to think rather than something to endure.
The cabin is built around the driver and passengers, whether you are five feet or six foot nine. Seating position, pedal placement, and headroom are set to the owner during the commission. This is one reason a Helderburg is built for one person, not designed to appeal to others.
Yes. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available. Several owners have chosen automatic for daily comfort. The choice is made during the commission to suit how the owner intends to drive.
It is a fair question, and the honest answer is no. A restomod usually means a replacement body on a new chassis with a crate engine, which means it is no longer numbers-matching. A Helderburg keeps the original chassis and the original engine block, then re-engineers the systems around them, so the vehicle stays authentic and numbers-matching. Many people search for a restomod Defender and find us, then learn the difference. It is not a restoration and not a restomod. It is a re-engineering.
A classic or restored Defender, yes, it is slow. A Helderburg is not. It is re-engineered around a performance-tuned turbo diesel with modern brakes and suspension, so it pulls strongly from low in the rev range and cruises easily at highway speed all day. The original character stays, the sluggishness does not. Power is not the point, composure is.
For a Defender meant to be driven and kept, a turbo diesel is the better engine for the owner. It makes safer low-end torque, returns far better range, lasts longer, and keeps the vehicle numbers-matching and authentic. A gas V8 is quicker in a straight line and louder. We cover the full comparison on our V8 swap versus turbo diesel page.
Yes. Under the United States 25-year rule, a vehicle that is at least 25 years old can be imported and is exempt from the federal motor vehicle safety standards that restrict newer imports. Every Helderburg begins with an original Defender that is more than 25 years old, so it qualifies. Once imported, it is titled and registered like any other classic vehicle.
Registration is handled state by state rather than federally, and for a vehicle more than 25 years old the process is straightforward in the large majority of states. We provide the import and title documentation an owner needs. Because state rules differ and change over time, we recommend confirming the current process with your state motor vehicle department, and we are glad to help your registration specialist with paperwork.
We have several owners in California, so a Helderburg can absolutely live there. Older vehicles are treated differently from new cars under emissions rules, and many strict states, California included, provide exemptions or classic provisions for vehicles of this age. The specifics vary and can change, so we recommend confirming the current requirement with your state agency before registering, and we supply the documentation that supports the process.
Yes. The vehicle is built in England and delivered to the owner. Import, shipping, and customs are coordinated as part of the commission, and the owner receives the documentation needed to title and register the vehicle on arrival.
Yes. A Helderburg is typically insured on an agreed-value collector policy, which sets the covered value up front rather than depreciating it like an ordinary car. Several specialist collector insurers write this kind of policy. We help owners arrange coverage before the vehicle ships.
Helderburg supports the vehicle for life. There is a direct line to the workshop, original parts remain available, and in the rare case an owner needs hands-on help, a mechanic is dispatched to the owner rather than the owner driving to a dealership. The vehicle is engineered for decades of use.
Numbers-matching classic Defenders are no longer manufactured, and the supply of authentic donor vehicles shrinks each year. A Helderburg is built on a vehicle that cannot be replaced, with proprietary systems found nowhere else, and is rarely seen on the secondary market. It is built for the second owner and the third, to be kept rather than flipped.
The numbers describe the wheelbase. The 90 is the short-wheelbase Defender, compact and nimble. The 110 is the long-wheelbase. The 130 is the longest, with the most interior and bed length. Each has its own character, and the right one depends entirely on how you intend to use it. A Spectre Double Cab is a pickup configuration with two full rows of seating in an enclosed cab and an open cargo bed behind it, and it can be specified with a hard or soft top. It suits owners who want both seating for passengers and an open bed for gear.
Many prospective owners want to hear from someone who already lives with one. Several Helderburg owners are public about their vehicles, including the Instagram channels linked on this page, and Helderburg can often arrange a conversation with a current owner. Hearing it firsthand usually answers what a brochure cannot.
A commission built from the beginning typically takes about twelve to sixteen months, because every panel, the paint, and the interior are made to the owner rather than pulled from a shelf. It can be faster. Taking over a build that is already in progress can shorten that to around four months, and on occasion a finished Helderburg is available now and can be had immediately. See the Defenders link in the navigation for what is currently available.
Yes, and it is encouraged. Helderburg is shown privately by appointment, and Helderburg travels to a small number of invited events each year. Seeing and driving one in person is the clearest way to understand the difference before any commission begins.
