Every so often, the automotive world produces a project that stops being “a build” and becomes a benchmark. That is how a leading Czech luxury outlet has described Helderburg Osprey, calling it “the ultimate evolution of the Defender D90” and one of the most sophisticated restomod projects on the road today.

Commissioned as a one‑of‑one Helderburg Defender D90 for a single client, Osprey had to do three things impeccably well: climb high‑altitude mountain passes in deep winter, run confidently through extreme terrain, and cover long stretches of motorway at real‑world speeds. Meeting that brief led to more than 3,000 hours of engineering and testing, including Helderburg Exclusive Suspension with a wider track for stability, the Aegis Braking System tuned for serious descents, and a fully re‑calibrated steering, power, and braking package developed as a single, cohesive system.

“Helderburg Osprey is the ultimate evolution of the Defender D90.”

Instead of the expected V8, Osprey runs a Helderburg Turbo Diesel SV Edition delivering 520 lb‑ft of torque at 1,800 rpm for immediate, controlled traction in snow and on loose surfaces. On the motorway, it cruises comfortably around 85 mph while achieving up to 28 mpg—nearly three times the efficiency of many comparable builds—proving that genuine long‑range capability and high performance can coexist in a classic Defender.

The body is hand‑shaped aluminum, finished in a one‑off Helderburg color that has been formally retired and will never be used again, and it is the only Helderburg build on which founder Paul Potratz would not change a single detail. For AUTOmagazine’s editors, Osprey is clear proof that the Defender legend not only endures—it can be refined to a level where tradition, modern engineering, and absolute usability finally meet.
