Custom Land Rover Defenders, in Four Styles

Choose one, or blend several, from refined and road bred to fully expedition. The lifted, go anywhere truck is only one of the four.

One of Four · Helderburg Heritage Build

Heritage. The one that started all of this.

Heritage was my first. Before Helderburg was a company, there was Diego, my first Defender, a 110. One December, Christy and I decided to stop putting it off. We loaded Diego with wool blankets, two campaign chairs, a cooler, a snack bag, and a camera, and drove into a New England winter with no real plan.

We stopped at every little shop that looked like it had a story. Hot apple cider in paper cups. Crab chowder we still talk about. Boston, then Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine. We chased lighthouses the way other people chase restaurants.

Heritage is that feeling, kept original where it counts and made right everywhere else. When I drive one, I am back in that December. It is the one many first-time owners recognize immediately, because it is usually the Defender already living in their memory.

Do not mistake the Helderburg Heritage Build for soft. It is as happy off-road as on, an all-purpose Defender like the Expedition. The difference from the Expedition and the Metropolitan is not cosmetic, it is engineered in. The Helderburg parts here are built for general duty, strong and capable, with a different chassis and suspension setup than the heavy-duty Expedition and the lowered, plusher Metropolitan. The cabin runs about thirty percent less sound deadening than the Expedition, and even so it leaves a restored Defender, and most custom ones, far behind for quiet.

What makes a heritage build different from a restoration?
A restoration returns a Defender to factory and leaves it driving like the year it was made. Heritage keeps the original character and authenticity, the chassis, the block, the lines, and re-engineers everything underneath so it drives like today. Honest outside, modern under.
Can I keep it looking classic and still drive it daily?
That is the point. The period details and patina stay; the brakes, the cabin, and the drivetrain do not. You get the look you fell for and a custom Defender you can live with.
Is heritage the right first Helderburg?
For many people, yes, because it is the one already in their memory. But there is no rule. Choose the one that pulls at you.
Two of Four · Helderburg Coastal Build

Coastal. The one that changes the whole day.

Coastal changes a mood the moment it pulls up. Lighter, airier, built for warm mornings and open doors and a dog who does not understand why we ever go inside.

Arriving in one is an event, the kind people talk about for days. Bring a Panama hat, or take the Bimini top, and let the morning in. The Helderburg Coastal Build is also the quickest of the four to build, usually six to ten months, which feels right, because Coastal was never about waiting. It was about going.

Will a coastal build hold up to salt and sand?
Built correctly, yes. Materials and finishes are chosen for the environment, and protection is engineered in where the eye does not see it. Beautiful and durable are not a trade.
Can it still go off-road, or is it just for the beach?
It can do both. Coastal is a feeling, not a limitation. The capability is there if you want it; the lightness is there either way.
What makes a coastal cabin feel different?
Lighter materials, more air, and a layout built for easy living. It is the cabin you climb into wet and happy.
Three of Four · Helderburg Metropolitan Build

Metropolitan. The Defender that forgot it was rugged.

Metropolitan is the one people do not expect. It rides on a different suspension than the rest, plusher and calmer, lowered just enough to slip under a parking-garage bar without a second thought.

We sharpen the handling at speed, tighten the turning radius, and add real steering assist, then pair it with a soft clutch or an automatic. A Defender that was born stiff and serious suddenly drives like a secret. When I take a Metropolitan through traffic I am not braced for anything. I am gliding, unbothered, the city sliding past. The Helderburg Metropolitan Build is for the person who wants all of the presence and none of the effort.

Is a Defender too rugged for city use?
Not when it is re-engineered. Composed steering, modern brakes, and a quiet cabin make a Helderburg as easy in traffic as it is on a trail. The ruggedness becomes presence, not punishment.
What makes a build read as understated rather than loud?
Color, proportion, and restraint. A single considered color, the right wheels, and nothing added for effect. A metropolitan Defender is designed to be noticed slowly.
Can it be understated outside and indulgent inside?
Often the best ones are. A quiet exterior and a cabin finished in leather tanned to order is a combination that ages beautifully.
Four of Four · Helderburg Expedition Build

Expedition. For the version of you that keeps going.

Expedition is the one most people picture when they hear Defender: lifted, on big tires, ready for anything. It is the most capable and most rugged of the four, and the boldest. It is also only one of the four, and it does not have to be where you begin.

Do not let the stance fool you. Expedition does it all, off-road, in town, or pointed at a horizon three states away. The tires look aggressive but run quiet, and we will fit a pure highway tire whenever you want one. The real difference is underneath: everything is built tougher and heavier duty, engineered to be leaned on. It is the most heavily built, and the most expensive, of the four.

Helpful to know
Is an expedition Defender still comfortable on the highway?
Yes. The suspension is engineered to remove the body roll a classic Defender is known for, so it stays composed at speed and capable off it. You do not trade the long drive for the rough one.
What should I add for real overlanding, and what is unnecessary?
We add range, protection, storage, and recovery points you will actually use, and we leave off the rest. If a part does not earn its place, it does not go on. Tell us your routes and we build to them.
Can an expedition build still be elegant?
It should be. Capability and restraint are not opposites. The best expedition Defenders look quiet until you read the details.
What Makes It a Helderburg

A Helderburg is not its paint alone. It is everything under it.

On the surface, a lot of Defenders look alike. Anyone can get the stance and the color close. The difference is in the parts you never see, and in what we do for years after you take delivery. We could build any of these four styles with off-the-shelf parts, or lesser ones. We do not, because then it would not be a Helderburg. It would be one of these two instead.

Restoration
Original parts, original behavior. It looks right and drives like a fifty-year-old truck. Fine for a short Sunday drive, not much past it.
Restomod
A new body on a swapped drivetrain. No longer numbers matching, no longer authentic, and carrying its own set of problems and uncertain value.

Helderburg
The original chassis and block, numbers matching, re-engineered underneath with our own systems. It drives like today and is built to last like an heirloom.

The Helderburg Warranty
7 years · unlimited miles
Most custom Defenders are sold with little or no warranty. A Helderburg includes seven years of unlimited-mile coverage, parts available for life, a mechanic who travels to the vehicle, and a place among owners in the Helderburg Field Club. The support matters as much as the build.

It is why many call us the best custom Defender builder in the world. Yes, a Helderburg costs more than a restoration or a restomod. Now you know why.

Mixing Styles

Most are not one style. They are a blend.

The four styles are where a commission starts, not where it has to end. The most interesting Helderburgs borrow from more than one. A few we have built, or could.

Heritage shape, Metropolitan ride

An original looking 110, lowered and quieted for the village, the gallery, and the coast road. Nothing lifted, nothing loud.

Coastal air, Expedition range

A soft top built for warm mornings that can still cross the pass when the weekend runs long. The beach truck that does not stop at the beach.

Metropolitan stance, Heritage color

The refined, low set town Defender, finished in a quiet period color and trimmed in leather tanned to order. Understated on purpose.

Tell me where you drive, and how you want to feel doing it. We start there, not from a catalog.

Designing Yours

The look can change completely, within a single style.

A style is where we start, not where we stop. Add a soft top to a Heritage and it loosens into something built for summer. Fit a larger wheel and tire and the same Defender reads taller, tougher, more deliberate. Small choices move the whole character a long way, and nothing is fixed once you have chosen a direction.

Most owners tell me the design itself was the part they did not expect to love. We work through it together, one decision at a time, until the Defender on paper is unmistakably theirs. It is, by design, a pleasure.

Before You Reach Out

The questions people ask, answered straight.

  • Every Helderburg is commissioned, so the price depends on the style, the model, and how far you take the details. Most fall between about $250,000 and the high four hundreds, and the figure is agreed in full before any work begins, so nothing about it is a surprise. Heritage opens the range, Coastal and Metropolitan sit in the middle, and Expedition is the most heavily built and the most expensive.
  • The old reputation comes from old parts. A Helderburg keeps the authentic chassis and engine block, then re-engineers the systems a Defender actually relies on, the drivetrain internals, cooling, brakes, steering, and electrics, so it is built to be driven hard for decades rather than coddled. We also support every Helderburg for life, with parts available and a direct line to the workshop, so reliability is engineered in, not left to chance.
  • They are different things. The new Defender is a capable modern SUV, and if that is what you want, buy one. A Helderburg is an authentic classic, re-engineered and built to your specification, the kind of vehicle that holds its value and gets handed down rather than traded in. If you want the newest dealer electronics, the new one wins. If you want something singular that drives like today and still matters in twenty years, that is what we build.
  • It is built to outlast its owner. The parts that fail on a tired Defender are exactly the ones we replace and re-engineer, and we keep parts available for the life of the vehicle. On value, to this day not one Helderburg has gone down in price, and authentic classic Defenders grow harder to find every year. We treat each one as an heirloom, not a purchase.
  • We build a re-engineered turbo diesel on the original block, not a dropped-in crate V8. A diesel gives the torque, range, and long-haul character a Defender is meant to have, and keeping the original block means the vehicle stays numbers matching, which protects both authenticity and value. A V8 swap is louder and gives up both.
  • The 90 is the short two-door, nimble and the easiest to park. The 110 is the four-door most people picture, with room for the family and the gear. The 130 is the longest, for those who want the most space of all. We build all three, and the right one comes down to how many people and how much you carry, not the look alone.
  • It starts with a conversation, not a configurator. We agree the style, the details, and the price, then build one at a time, by hand. Build time depends on the style: Coastal runs about 6 to 10 months, Heritage and Metropolitan about 10 to 12, and Expedition about 10 to 14, since it is the most heavily built. You are kept close to it the whole way.
  • A re-engineered Helderburg is built to be driven, not babied, so living with one is closer to a well-sorted modern vehicle than a fragile classic. Service is personal: parts stay available for life, and when something is needed the workshop comes to you rather than sending you to a dealer. Most owners drive theirs regularly, which is the entire point.
On Choosing

There is no wrong choice.

Choose the one that speaks to you, or the blend that does. Not the popular one. Not your neighbor's. Yours.

And if you live with it and find your heart was elsewhere, tell me. I will take it back and build the one you should have had. It will not sit long. To this day, not one Helderburg has gone down in value, and these Defenders get rarer every year.

So do not agonize. Go with your heart. The only custom Defender you will regret is the one you never build.
